At a time when many firearms experts were promoting large bullets traveling at slow speeds, Roy was experimenting with lighter weight bullets traveling at extremely high velocities. It was his belief that this combination was ideal in creating the hydrostatic shock needed to kill animals quickly and humanely. He developed the.220 Rocket (based on the.220 Swift), and the first Weatherby Magnums -.257,.270 and.300 (based on the.300 HH Mag.).From his small operation in South Gate, California, Roy was building his own rifles on virtually any actions he could obtain (FN Mauser, Schultz Larsen and Mathieus to name a few), as well as offering to rechamber rifles for his newly designed magnum calibers.
Over the years, Roy would have many friendly arguments, often conducted through printed letters and rebuttals in magazines, with the likes of OConnor, Keith and other firearms experts on the merits of his high velocity cartridge and rifles. At that time, he was producing his rifles on Belgian FN Mauser and French Brevex Magnum Mauser actions. Later, in 1957, he would develop a new action - originally designated the Model 58 (later to become the legendary Mark V) - specifically designed to handle the magnum loads of his increasingly popular cartridges. It has a walnut stock and non-fluted barrel and was advertised as weighing 6-14 lbs. I thought it might be an ultralight, but it has black plastic stock, not a Medalist. Weatherby Identification Serial Number It StartsAnybody know how I can tell what model it is Can i tell by the serial number It starts with a WB. My posts are not directed toward any specific person unless I mention them by name. What chambering is it If its anything based on the 30-06 or the 308 case it will be a 6 lug. The only Weatherby chambering made in the late 6 lug action is the 240. It is not Montana light, but pretty light compared to a normal hunting rifle. See if it will read. IIRC, the.280 chambering makes it a standard Synthetic or an Ultra Lightweight. The Synthetic weighed 8lbs w24, 26 or 28 bbl The UL weighed 5-34 to 6-34 lbs w24 bbl (only). When things slow down this weekend, maybe I can get some pictures uploaded if you think it would help. The stock is an injection molded part made by or for Weatherby. This is my stainless 7mm-08 carbine in a McM Sako Classic standard fill, 7lb 1 oz w Zeiss 2.5-10x42 Diavari Victory. Actually, the 6-lug action is current production in standard (non-magnum) calibers. The 6-lug ultra lightweight is advertised as weighing 5-34 lbs. The six lug standard action is also used for the 240 magnum as well as short action calibers by using a stop. ![]() Getting back to the original topic he has a standard weatherby synthetic 6 lug in 280. They weigh around 6.5 or so at least the 280 I had weighed that much. These actions are lighter then most actions including the 700 action and have a short bolt lift.great combo for a custom rifle and surprised more are not built on it.
